Do You Also Want to Be Healthy in Old Age? - 5 Tips

Feeling young and vital, like children, at least sometimes - that's it. Age research has some good suggestions for people who want quality of life in old age.

Do you know healthy older people? If so, what is your secret to your quality of life?

Research Results

Medicine professor Thomas Perls * is one of the world's leading researchers in the field of longevity. He acquired his findings in a study on 150 people who have turned 110 and over. He found these people in USA, Canada, Japan and other countries. There are currently around 350 people worldwide who are over 110 years of age. In his opinion, these are extremely few.

The medical professor speaks about his “centenarian” research at universities and congresses. Which people will be 100 or even 110 years old, and why? Perls, 58, has been asking this question since his youth.

He likes to open his presentations at congresses with a little quiz: "Do you smoke? Okay, subtract 15 years. Are you good at coping with stress? Good, then add 5 years."

Rauchen 2. Adipositas (Fettleibigkeit) 3. Bluthochdruck 4. Diabetes 5. Bewegungsmangel..It is known that the following risk factors played a d…

It is known that the following risk factors played a decisive role in the death of these old people: 1. Smoking 2. Obesity 3. High blood pressure 4. Diabetes 5. Lack of exercise

In the German-speaking countries we have a life expectancy (2015) of

  • Germany: 82 for women and 77 for men

  • Austria: 84 for women and 79 for men

  • Switzerland: 84 for women and 80 for men

One could be of the opinion that if we are already around 80 years old according to statistics, then we would like to experience it healthy. Makes sense right? And when we grow old healthy, why shouldn't life go on a little longer?

Mr. Perls suspects that there would actually be a lot more in our latitude and state of development. He is thinking of 89 for women and 86 for men. The question is whether we want to make use of our genes or fight against them! He followed up on the oldest people in the world and found them primarily among the Seventh-day Adventists.

Seventh-Day Adventists (SDA) and Health

The STAs have the highest life expectancy in the United States. They are very ethnically diverse and spread across America. They tend to lead healthy lives, that is, they do not smoke or drink alcohol, are vegetarians and exercise a lot.

SDAs have many health programs (see NEWSTART blog) and have a science center in California that is responsible for the latest knowledge. They also tend to have hospitals and health centers that are strong in the use of natural healing methods. They are professionals in cures for diabetes II and other lifestyle diseases.

The Landhaus Die Arche (DE - above) and the mountain pension Sonnmatt (CH - below) are the best-known spa houses in German-speaking countries. (Terri and I live close by helping our daughter and son-in-law - wonderful area!!)

Mr. Perls discovered that genes are only responsible for 30 percent of our age. More important is our behavior, our lifestyle. That's the good news:

We are largely in control of how healthy we want to be in old age and how old we want to become.

Alzheimer's problem

About half of people over 85 get Alzheimer's. That should be avoided. How ? Research tries to get at the genes. Drinking water regularly is sure to have a positive effect. Those who take their 2-2.5 liters of water in their old age have an advantage, because around 85% of the brain consists of water. In addition, thirst disappears with age, so that one has to consciously take care of drinking. Many elderly people in retirement homes 'forget' this and then suffer from many signs of aging that would not be necessary if the blood had a better quality thanks to the water.

Problem Stress

How older people have learned to deal with stress appears to be an equally important health factor. It is not so important how much stress people have, but how they have learned to deal with it. Eustress, i.e. positive stress, also makes older people flourish and motivates them.

In affluent countries, insufficient management of stress is more damaging to life expectancy than smoking and alcohol! (BLOG).

Most people know how to reduce stress, namely with exercise, meditation, prayer, enough sleep or individual recipes.

It is important that you do your best not to let the stress get to you. Research shows that otherwise the risk of heart disease, but also cancer and Alzheimer's, increases.

Mr. Perls reports that you have observed these very old people to have low scores for neuroticism and high scores for extroversion. To put it simply: you don't eat it all up, you can process worries and let go. They are also exceptionally good at building and maintaining social bonds. How far this trait is genetically present or learned, he cannot say.

He recommends that you have your high blood pressure and cholesterol level checked regularly so that you can react in good time and without medication.

Why do Women get older than Men?

Thanks to the reduced number of men who smoke, they will come closer to the age of women. Since increased smoking has been observed in women, it can be assumed that their age expectancy will be somewhat reduced. What hardly changes is that extremely old age is almost only reached by women. It is genetic. Men have the advantage that when they reach 90 years or more, they are healthy more often. Women often live on for a long time even with chronic diseases - they are more resilient.

Sounds good: women are more resilient! In a family you are usually responsible for their health and thus develop more knowledge.

Anyone who has a lot of exercise in old age and drinks enough water to do so has decisive advantages.

Anti Aging Industry

The pharmaceutical industry and also Silicon Valley companies are researching drugs that are supposed to make us grow older. Most of what is being advertised is charlatanism. Allegedly life-extending substances, snake oil and the like have been a business since ancient times.

Nothing against marketing healthy foods. But nobody makes big money with it. But, for example, with senseless hormone therapies that cost 11,000 to 20,000 dollars a year and can even have dangerous side effects. The antiaging industry seems legitimate to have very little faith.

There is also serious research that works towards extending life. The research is still very theoretical. The big problem is that any treatment has side effects. What is supposed to prolong life in theory can in practice increase the risk of cancer.

5 Tips

Getting old healthy largely depends on our lifestyle. Genetic advantages may also contribute.

The following 5 tips can be used advantageously:

  1. WATER - Start drinking 2 - 2.5 liters of water (no beer or coffee !!) early enough. With this you clean the blood and supply one of your most important organs, the brain, with the necessary functionality. (BLOG)

  2. EXERCISE - Create an exercise plan that will allow you to take up to 6-10,000 steps a day. Exercise nourishes muscles and improves blood circulation, and allows better stress management. Sometimes it helps if you pursue this goal together with someone. (BLOG)

  3. NUTRITION - The more plant-based diets you indulge in and the fewer animal products like meat and dairy products, the more beneficial it will affect your body and mind. (BLOG)

  4. GOOD THOUGHTS - We know from research that positive thoughts can have a corresponding impact on the whole body. Find joyful literature, pleasant people and positive experiences! (BLOG)

  5. DEALING WITH STRESS - As soon as you identify a stressor, remind yourself: I don't want any unnecessary stress! Push it away, replace it with good thoughts, and shelve it. This takes some practice. But if you do all the other points, then this last point will also be within reach. (BLOG)

8 Tips for Stressed Parents

To be a parent and thus an educator is a great responsibility and at the same time a great challenge nowadays. Associated with this, however, is a blessing, or should we say an emotional reward, an emotional bond with one's own offspring that cannot actually be surpassed. That is why many married couples still want to have children in this postmodern age.

Education in the Postmodern Era

Older age groups are still consciously aware of how modernity has changed into postmodernism over the past fifty years. The whole of life and with it the social education system has changed. Especially in rich Europe and the USA we are so gifted with goods and variety that it has become great challenges.

....Früh übt, was einmal ein Suchtprofi werden will ! Seien Sie vorsichtig mit solchen Spielzeugen!..Practice early on what you want to become an addiction professional! Be careful with such toys!....

Practice early on what you want to become an addiction professional! Be careful with such toys!

Pampering versus Discipline

Our thinking has changed. When it comes to raising children, hardly anyone thinks about the long-term influence of this or that decision or non-decision on the child. Many young married couples let go as much as possible and are happy when everything goes reasonably well.

Saying NO or YES at the right moment has sometimes become an art. (BLOG) Christian parents in particular, who help their children on their way to heaven and want to make them strong for later life, so that they do not learn to live 'in this world' but rather learn principles and beliefs from the heavenly world, are particularly challenged .

Discipline, says the verse in Galatians chapter 5, verses 22-23, is one of the gifts of God if one cultivates one's relationship with Jesus and takes it seriously. So it seems to be a divine principle. Discipline has a lot to do with Emotional Intelligence (BLOG), a topic that is extremely important for a happy life.

Pampering means saying a YES where a NO would have been necessary so that the child learns principles that will strengthen them for adulthood. (BLOG) The other way around, it can happen that important interests and needs of the child are given a NO, where a YES would have enabled support and strengthening.

Like the poodles, children c…

Sooo sweet! Like the poodles, children can wrap you around their finger. If you as a parent have a tendency to become defenseless, then think about how you can support one another in this.

Here are a few tips that we hope will be applicable to you, dear reader:

1. The Question of Guilt

  • Many parents are quick to feel guilty that their child is having problems with obedience or social interaction with their peers.

  • They may blame their genes, or shift the blame to their ancestors, possibly the spouse.

  • Whatever the child's temperament, there is still plenty of time and opportunities to adapt it to Christian norms. However, when the child has reached puberty, then important principles should have been saved.

  • Every child has its own personality. That's what makes it unique. Encourage all that will be important to the child in adulthood. For example, dealing with forgiveness, giving, obedience, saying excuses and living, taking responsibility for animals and toys, keeping order, these are topics that should be considered.

2. Borderline Experiences

  • It is clear that particularly intelligent children always want to explore a topic up to its limit, and often beyond the limit. Children who have strong intrinsic motivation (BLOG) are particularly active in this regard.

  • What is OK and what is NOK? An OK and NOK conceal important values and principles that will help the child to accept boundaries better, then to understand them and later to live them themselves.

  • There are children with a strong propensity for power and independence. This actually shows up later as a strength and leads to strong individuality. But here, too, there are limits set by our moral biblical understanding. When power leads to responsibility, that's great. When independence leads to willingness to serve, that's wonderful.

3. Authority and Respect

When parents live in authority among themselves, the wife respects her husband, and the husband really loves his loved one (Eph 5:28), this will have a strong positive influence on the children. Reverence for good rules, respect for fellow human beings and the unknown, acceptance of the unpleasant and appreciation of the beautiful, all of this has its influence on the values of the child.

In puberty, boys and girls look for boundaries that they can cross. Some are very successful at this. Pubescent young people want to redefine themselves, in relation to society and also to the family.

4. Puberty

  • Many parents fear puberty. If this is prepared a little, then it works out much better. Puberty is characterized by the child's new self-knowledge and sociality, the new perception of society and thus the adaptation of the boundaries to a ‘new world’.

  • The relationship between father and daughter in particular should be encouraged before puberty. The daughter changes not only emotionally, but also physically. If the father appreciates that and takes pleasure in her, unconditionally, then there is less danger that a boy will take advantage of her insecurity and play his game with her.

  • In the early twenties, when reality has caught up with the now grown-up children, they will be ünft sensible ’again and mostly very grateful. Grateful for all the barely ascertained boundaries and principles, the value of which they now recognize.

5. Team player

  • Children like to play in a team. The family is such a team. It is therefore important to encourage this teamwork, to let team happen again and again and not to endanger it through overreacted frustration. Mutual fellowship should become a joy and a wish. Spending time together, maybe even on vacation, is a privilege for everyone.

  • Playing in a team means accepting and living the values of the team. This strengthens the team spirit. A family as a team is priceless. Our family has experienced this especially through our lived musicality. Various appearances and the production of 7 CDs have welded us together. Today these are wonderful memories of one of the most beautiful family times.

6. Self-discovery

  • We parents wish the very best for our children. This includes that the child learns to accept himself for what it is and to create something special from it for the environment. Self acceptance is most important. The greatest role models are of course the parents.

  • If there is constant quarreling and reproaching each other, the fears of children cannot be replaced by love. The social and self-competence suffers. (BLOG)

  • If, as a father or mother, I am very dissatisfied with myself or my partner, this quickly leads to unwise behavior towards the children. You spontaneously make wrong decisions, need hurtful words and act myopically.

  • Therefore, every parent is challenged to constantly maintain their own balance; if it doesn't exist, we should look for it immediately. Everyone has their own strategies. For Christians this means to go to JESUS immediately and ask HIM for strength and wisdom and love, which he would like to give us in abundance.

Maintaining quiet time with an interesting book has many positive effects. Being able to switch off and deal with an important topic in literary form is quality of life.

7. Maintain quiet time

In order not to be a victim of this postmodern world and to be swept away by it, it is important to keep reorienting yourself. Christians do this best in the morning and in the evening with a time of devotion with our Lord and Master.

Quiet time is not only important for your own personal competence, but also for social skills (BLOG).

It is in contact with our Creator, among other things. about that he can replace our fears with his overflowing love. This will make us mature and wise and help us to face all the challenges with the children properly.

Perhaps you can still remember the many spray shops. A symbol of rebellion and social discontent. Rebellion always finds its forms of expression. The passive form leads to social withdrawal.

I admire each of you very much, and I hope this blog has helped you fulfill your important responsibility. In these final paragraphs I want two or three final thoughts straight to

The mothers and fathers of very rebellious children.

I am particularly concerned about you.

It is clear that your job is a difficult one and there are times when you feel like throwing in the towel. But keep calm. One day you will look back on this difficult time of conflict and be grateful that you stayed on track - that you continued to do the right thing for your children, which God gave you for a period of time.

This era will pass so quickly and the present pressures will seem insignificant. What will then be important to you are the loving relationships you have built with your family, even if other parents have run away or buried themselves in work. But you have the knowledge and the conviction that you have accepted your responsibility and raised the children to be children of God.

Therefore, I hope that you will resist the temptation to feel deprived because of your son or daughter's difficult temper. You are not alone. A previous survey of 3,000 parents found that 85 percent of families had at least one strong-willed child. So you are no exception. That's human nature. Most of us who have raised two or more children have gone through some of the same stresses that you experience.

We survived and so will you. It's great that you don't give up and stick with it.

Gemeinsame Erlebnisse bedeuten: Ich liebe dich. Daher ist konzentrierte Aufmerksamkeit ein Heil- und Wundermittel für alle Kinder...What is good for …

What is good for rebellious children is experiencing interesting stories with mom and / or dad. Shared experiences mean: I love you. Therefore, focused attention is a cure and miracle cure for all children.

Perhaps one last IMPORTANT tip at the end:

CONCENTRATED ATTENTION

  1. By observing and asking why, you can get closer to the inner needs of your rebellious child. There are always reasons for such behavior. Maybe it struggles to accept its siblings, ie. it doesn't feel loved enough.

  2. This love can be nurtured through focused attention. Take this child and spend maybe 10-15 minutes a day with them all alone. Nobody should disturb you. You are looking for eye contact and maintain your inner posture using moments and a voice that say:

I LIKE YOU, I LOVE YOU.

This method is particularly advantageous for fathers, because they are often away all day. As a teacher, I have to say that where fathers do this to their children, they suddenly perform better at school too. Sure, performance is not the most important thing, but what matters is that the child begins to heal from the inside out and also behaves more socially competent. It will be eternally grateful to you.

Part 1 - What is Stress Really?

Our son’s 18th birthday was a beautiful day and perfect for a fun family celebration! The birthday cake, however, had other ideas and proved to be a huge source of stress. Poor Terri!!

GOOD sense is, of all things among men, the most equally distributed; for every one thinks himself so abundantly provided with it, that … they do not usually desire a larger measure of this quality than they already possess.'                  René Descartes

Isn’t it the same with stress?

Don’t we all think we have enough of it??

Interesting. And then there are the psychologists, who say that

92% of all our worries are totally unnecessary!

If that is true, we really have a problem. Just imagine, our lives could be so much easier! We get stressed much too easily. Life needn’t be so troublesome! Shall we take a look at it?

What is Stress?

Definition

Stress is "a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances."

There are several different kinds of stress:

Survival Stress   -   fight or flight

Environmental Stress -  response to noise, crowding, work and family pressures

Fatigue and Overwork   -   a cumulative stress that builds up over a long time

Internal Stress   -   worrying about things we cannot control or that are not really important

A stress reaction is a subjective condition that arises from the fear that we will soon be confronted with some (probably) unavoidable, negative situation, which will seem to continue indefinitely. The accompanying belief is that one cannot influence the outcome using one’s available resources.

When we think of stress, it’s not just the causes we think about, but mostly the effects we notice it has on our bodies as a result of real or imagined external demands (stressors) placed on us. So stress we feel is actually the body’s response to these stressors.

The body’s response to these stressors, bzw. seine Reaktion auf diese.'

What Stress IS

o the body’s reaction to a challenge

o a strong feeling of physiological and psychological tension

o the beginning of many illnesses

What Stress IS NOT

o Stress is not necessarily negative. Sometimes it helps us to reach our goals.

o It is not exactly fear.

o It is not the direct cause of sickness and disease, but promotes their development.

So, not all stress is equal. Here is a more exact definition:

Distress (Negative Stress)

> Stimuli that are judged to be disturbing, threatening or excessively demanding are called distress.

> Stress is judged as negative when it occurs often without achieving physical recuperation between episodes.

> Distress can be avoided by learning and applying certain coping strategies.

Eustress (Positive Stress)

> Stressors can also have a positive influence on the organism. This produced stress is called eustress .

> Eustress occurs when a person is motivated to action and during periods of happiness, like during sports, games, excitement, work and success.

People of varying strengths carrying the same load

....      Starke Person                              Durchschnittliche Person   &…

       strong                                                 average                                              weak

We are all different. Weaker people need physical and emotional support in order to be able to meet stressful situations with any success.

The same person carrying different burdens

   ....               Schwere Last                                   &nbsp…

                       heavy                                                         medium                                               light

As long as we have our burdens under control, all is well, but everyone has a breaking point. So it’s important to know one’s own limits.

Two people dealing with the same obstacle

Don’t you feel sorry for the man on the left? If he knew he could set most of his burden down, he would surely do it. Wouldn´t he? So many people go through life carrying unnecessary burdens. They could get rid of them if they actually wanted to!!

The Best Attitude toward Stress Factors

Psychologists R. Lazarus and S. Folkman came to the conclusion that people evaluate their own stress factors according to the following three criteria and see them as:

1  irreparable damage               2  danger / a problem                 3  a challenge

What do you think is the most successful attitude for dealing with stressful situations?

Challenges are problems for pessimists, but for optimists, every problem is a challenge! Those who can view stress factors through optimistic eyes will have a decided advantage in life.

How are stress and achievement related?

There is no stress in the area between A and B, and production is low.  Between B and C the people are highly motivated, and their accomplishments are at an optimum. The area between C and D is a critical point where too much stress begins to cause performance to sink. Stress levels between D and E are so high that production dwindles and illnesses begin to develop.

Burnout

When stress levels remain in the D-E for a prolonged period of time, burnout is a logical consequence. “Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed and unable to meet constant demands. As the stress continues, you begin to lose the interest or motivation that led you to take on a certain role in the first place.”1 Depression can also follow. The sufferer can become aggressive and can more easily succumb to addictions.

Burnout was first observed in individuals in helping professions, but has long since spread to many others including those employed as sportsmen, politicians, researchers and even salespeople. Longtime care-givers for handicapped relatives are also at risk.

ATTENTION:  Early Danger Signals:

Some examples of observable characteristics in the initial stages of burnout are as follows:

  • More dedication to certain goals
  • Nonstop work, no breaks
  • No time to relax or recuperate
  • Feels indispensible and strong
  • Work is the main reason for living, lives to work
  • Hyperactivity and ignorance of one’s own needs
  • Failures are ignored or blocked out
  • Social contacts suffer, for example neglecting one’s customers or partner
  • Exhaustion and chronic fatigue
  • Seeking distraction or comfort in alcohol, tobacco, Internet, computer activities, food or in more frequent sexual intercourse
  • Loss of the ability to concentrate
  • Sleeping disorders

Boreout

Boreout  or boredom burnout syndrome is a psychological disorder that causes physical illness. This theory was first expounded in 2007 in Diagnose Boreout, a book by Peter Werder and Philippe Rothlin, two Swiss business consultants

Victims of boreout are underchallenged at work and become bored. They feel they must develop strategies to appear busy in order to avoid being detected as dispensable in the company. The problem is not laziness. Though the causes of burnout and boreout are diametrical opposites, the effects of both are very similar.

How do we react to stress?

Cats react immediately to stress, and our inner organs are just as responsive. A variety of hormones are released, circulation quickens as the pulse races, blood sugar levels rise and red blood cell production increases. Breathing is also accelerated and all our senses become more alert, while certain other bodily functions, such as digestion, are suppressed.

Influence of Stress on Thoughts and Imagination (at the cognitive level)

With stress, the ability to concentrate is diminished. One is more easily distracted. Short- and long-term memory are both affected. The ability to prioritize is reduced. More errors occur. Analysis of present situation and future plans are often neglected. Logical thought processes crumble into chaos.

The Emotional Level

Because of difficulty relaxing, nervousness increases. Pain may also be imagined (hypochondria). Impatience, intolerance, power games and thoughtlessness can be manifested toward others. Self-control and morals are successively surrendered. Despondency and feelings of inferiority grow.

The Behavioral Level

Speech can be affected: stuttering may cause a loss in linguistic flow. Hobbies lose their charm. Absenteeism at work follows. The consumption of alcohol, tobacco, coffee and other drugs tends to rise. Vitality sinks, insomnia rises, relational skills wither (the blame game thrives), personality structure is altered, and the most tragic of all: suicidal thoughts multiply.

Recognize Frustration

When the expectations placed on us by ourselves or others are too high, it is only natural that frustrations will arise. It is desirable and possible to react to these immediately. But how?

1. Recognize frustration.

2. Analyze frustrations. Are adjustments possible? Sometimes circumstances can be altered; sometimes we have to alter ourselves. Choosing to make adjustments and identify with the new situation without getting frustrated can be a big step in the right direction.

3. Make adjustments and wait. After making a decision, expectations must be adjusted. Patience can pave the way for frustrating circumstances to be transformed.

An Ounce of Prevention

It’s always better to recognize a problem when it appears and deal with it while it is small than to wait until it gets worse, hoping it will go away. It’s a good idea to make a plan, think it over and give yourself enough time to handle any unforeseen issues that may arise. More on that in the next blogs.

Aggression is mostly rewarded in our society. The tugger gets his right, while the silence goes unnoticed. Here it is important to learn to differentiate between the real values.

Positive Stress - Eustress

.)

Positive stress increases alertness and promotes maximum performance of the body without harming it

Eustress occurs when a person is motivated to perform certain things. Even with frequent, long-term occurrences, it has a positive effect on the psychological or physical functionality of an organism.

Wunderbar! Nicht alle Menschen erleben das so. Für viele ist das Autofahren ein Disstress !..Eustress on German autobahns - finally drive as fast as you want ... Wo…

. Wonderful! Not all people experience it that way. For many, driving is a distress!

Negative stress - distress (or distress)

Stress is only perceived negatively if it occurs frequently or permanently and cannot be compensated physically and / or psychologically and is therefore rated as unpleasant, threatening or overwhelming. In particular, negative effects can occur if, because of your interpretation of the stimuli, the person does not see or has no opportunity to cope with the situation (hopeless). The Greek prefix 'dys' means "bad, bad".

What causes distress in the body?

This stress is more than an increased pulse or nervousness. It sometimes means a massive burden on all body systems, including the brain.

Extreme stress floods us with chemical substances. Feelings like anger, fear, worry or bitterness can have a long-term devastating effect on our health. Buried feelings, hostility and anger also create volcanic structures in the body.

Today, neuroscientists are able to understand the sequence of reactions of toxic thoughts fairly accurately. But as soon as we have knowledge and understanding about it and develop understanding, then we have tools in hand.

Two cell functions are particularly important in this context:

  1. the protection - by the immune system, which takes care of internal threats, and the HPA axis (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal cortex), which protects us from external attacks.

  2. Growth - is responsible for breaking down and replacing millions of cells every day. For example, the intestinal mucosa is replaced every 3 days!

Ideally, the body should be able to focus more on growth than protection. But as soon as there is distress, the organism defends itself and fights the stress factors with full energy and all possible reserves.

Our immune system, for example, can destroy most cancer cells itself. But as soon as we fall into a state of stress, the wrong amount of chemical substances is released, which falsify the DNA of the immune cells, thereby impairing their effectiveness.

General: The body can no longer perform at its peak under stressful stress, which makes it prone to all kinds of problems.

Take cortisol, for example

Cortisol regulates and supports functions in our heart, immune system and metabolism. If the cortisol level rises due to stress and excessive amounts are released in the brain, this leads to a temporary loss of memory. (Check with blackout). The transmitters and receivers of electrochemical impulses (dendrites) begin to dissolve and the hormonal balance goes crazy.

The following problems can then arise:

  • Depression, phobias, panic attacks

  • Fatigue, lethargy, exhaustion, insomnia

  • Anxiety, confusion, lack of creativity

  • Headaches, migraines and forgetfulness
